Having set sail for an operational patrol off Brest the Swordfish was not heard from again. She was presumed to have hit a mine killing all 39 crew.
Although its not proven that the Swordfish struck a mine, the wreck is broken in two just forward of the conning tower, which is consistent with her having struck a mine.
