Netley Abbey SS was a British Cargo Steamer of 1630 tons built in 1878. On the 4th August 1899, when on route from Cardiff for Cronstadt (a Russian port city located on Kotlin Island, 19 miles west of Saint Petersburg) carrying a cargo of 2,300 tons of coal for the Russian Government, she collided in fog with HMS Surprise and sank. All 24 crew were saved.
