Travelling from Cardiff to Cronstadt with a cargo of coal, when she was struck amidships by the overtaking SS Tern. There is some confusion as to why the SS Tern hit the SS Clarinda as it was a clear night. All crew were picked up by the SS Tern.

The wreck lies upright, but broken and much of her hull plating has collapsed outwards and sitting away from the main body of the wreck. The two boilers and engines are the highest parts.
