She was torpeded by German submarine U-772. Only 4 of her 41 crew were injured in the blast (one later died). The Black Hawk was abandoned, and the surviors taken on board the British corvette HMS Dahlia. The wreck now lies in 2 pieces. The stern is south of Portland Bill and the bow in Worbarrow bay.
